Journeying into the mystery of self-3

2.2. Intelligence: Adding understanding to the data of consciousness

When data is present to your consciousness, your intelligence comes into play to make sense out of it. You find their connections to what is familiar to you in the past (memory). You try to name it and understand it. Your mind has questions: What, When, Where, How and Why. When something is present to the consciousness, we seek to understand it and form hypothesis as to what it is and why it is. This hypothesis could be realistic and helpful or very subjective and self defeating.

2. Awareness of our faculties that leads to self-transcendence

When you were born, you were not aware of yourself, nor of the world in which you were born in. You must have had an undifferentiated consciousness, being one with your mother. But gradually you began to open up to the world of people and things in the measure that you began to have a differentiated consciousness, an “I” different from your mum and others. This process of differentiation took place through the personal contact that your mum, dad and others had with you. You began to name things in order to distinguish one from the other. You became familiar with people and things through the retention of memory and the subsequent recognition of them. Your journey as a fertilized egg towards what you are today has been a marvellous growth of knowing and relating with the world of people and things around you.

Formation for Moral Transformation

Towards Moral transformation of the person

Credibility of a person largely depends on his moral integrity which is manifested in his/her capacity to “walk the talk”. Clergy scandals have caused much damage to the credibility of Church personnel. Formation in the moral dimension effects what Lonergan calls “moral conversion”. It is the clarification and elimination of the view that satisfaction is the same as value [1]. It is also the discovery for ourselves of what is good and right. This applies not just to decisions, but also to action. (more…)

The Seven contemporary Virtues- 6 & 7

Tolerance and Dialogue, and Simplicty

Introductory Reflection:

The smaller our world has become, the greater our awareness of the multiplicity of everything in our globalized world. Communities and societies have become multi -racial, multi -cultural and multi- religious. With globalization comes greater awareness of differences in all levels. Even business enterprises have become multi-national. Slowly we are exposed to the multifaceted ill effects of the phenomenon of humanity fractured by inequalities and greed. So often we miss the truth of everything. It (the truth) seems to be hidden under a thick crust of fear, mistrust, suspicion, intolerance, hatred and prejudice.

Liberty of Spirit and Boldness and Creativity

Liberty of the Spirit

Introductory reflection:

There is something in the inner person of everybody wants to be is nothing less than a true freedom to reach out, to achieve and to go beyond anything and everything. Nobody enjoys enslavements. Although this is innate in every human being, it can be raised to the level of virtue. As a virtue, liberty of spirit stands against the hedonistic lifestyle that our postmodern world propagates, exalting the secular virtues of sexual freedom and the pursuit of self-centered happiness at all cost. Liberty of Spirit is not a virtue that gives freedom for abuse. Pope Benedict rightly said when he explained, “The freedom to kill is not real freedom, but a tyranny that reduces the human being to slavery” Amidst the pervasive culture of control and death, we are called to give witness to the meaning of God’s gift of life in abundance (Jn.10:10). awakening2.
