This research work is not to write the elaborate history of the Congregation but to offer to readers the congregational events very relevant to the life of the Founder, Saint Anthony Mary Claret and the Congregation in its history in the course of 150 years of her existence in the Universal Church and the world. It presents a simple chronology without judgement and principally based on the major accessible sources of the Congregation. As you will notice in this work, the essential events of the Institute which form important part and parcel of the life and history of the Congregation are found here. Principally, the work gives us a synthetic form of the life and work of our Father Founder, the origins of the various branches of the Claretian Family coupled with some significant events in them and finally the significant happenings in our Congregation of Missionaries Sons of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
I will like to highlight some of the important events of the Congregation found in this work: the process for the approval of the Constitutions, the Directory and its development, the different General Chapters and Assemblies, Foundations (lst in each country), creation and constitution of Major Organisms (Delegations, Provinces) and their juridical changes, the various missions we have world over, Formation Centres and higher Centres of Ecclesiastical Studies. There are also the different Editorials and principal Publications (Books, popular and scientific Reviews, etc.) of the Congregation. Among other things are some centres for worship, Pontifical nominations, beatifications and canonisations, Claretian Martyrs and other Claretian events in the Church. The following are considered seriously: statistics, Congregational expansions, important celebrations and inaugurations; Encounters (General Government, Formation, Apostolate, Economy, Renewal,
Conferential/Continental, Secretaries, etc). Others are some of the important circular letters of Fathers’ Generals, creation of General Secretariats; monuments, museums and other similar things dedicated to Father Founder or Claretian Martyrs and also to the entire Congregation.
This work contains also valuable writings of Father Founder and other Claretian publications in various languages.
It is important to know that this work gives a rapid and panoramic vision of the life and mission of the Congregation. It is not thematic but a chronological work; it starts from the birth of Father Founder to the last day of the year 2000. It gives more insight to the different fundamental and essential dates of the Congregation.
We hope that the work will be useful to all Claretian Missionaries especially all in formation (formators and formandi), for different Claretian Encounters, personal life and as a source of consultation.
At the same time, it is meant to encourage among Claretians the research on the life and mission of Father Founder and the Congregation.
We have a long and rich history which has to be learnt, assimilated and dynamised so that we make good history ourselves. Karl Jaspers says that no reality is more essential to our self-awareness than history.
Let us remember always the famous phrase of John Paul II: «You have not only a glorious history to remember and to recount, but also a great history still to be accomplished» (Vita Consecrata 110).
